Aging well in midlife and beyond doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or out of reach.

If you’re unsure of where to start, you’re not alone! Depending on where you are and what your idea of ‘aging well’ looks like, it may feel daunting to know how to bridge the gap.

Aging well isn’t about a to-do list, my friend. It’s about creating a lifestyle that encompasses the routines, habits, behaviors, and activities that foster health and well-being as you move through the years.

A lifestyle that supports your desire to age well isn’t created overnight - it evolves. And you can spark your evolution right now.

Below are five shifts you can bring into your awareness and take action on. These support your physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life as you age.

1. Listen to your body

An important part of aging well is hearing what your body is saying.

Rather than holding on to habits and beliefs that limit your ability to age well, choose to notice and honor your energy levels, need for rest, and the messages your body sends. Whether it’s stress, pain, or your emotions, your body has much to tell you!

Check in with your body daily to receive valuable insight on what you need. You may want to do a body scan before getting out of bed, or sit quietly after lunch and notice what your body is holding for you. Find what works best for you to hear what your body has to say.

Respond to your body with awareness and care to create a solid foundation for aging well.

2. Sustain your body

Nutrition and hydration are critical components of a lifestyle that fosters aging well. What you eat and drink impacts your physiology and your emotions.

Allow what you put into your body to support your desire to age well. This isn’t about restriction or strict rules. It’s about gaining knowledge. You can then make informed choices and create small shifts.

Be aware that certain foods may affect you differently in this season of life. Sensitivities may develop, or you might lose the taste for a former favorite. And did you know your sense of thirst decreases as you age? Healthy hydration habits help prevent dehydration, which is common in older adults.

Sustain your body through choices that help you age well.

3. Establish a broad circle of care

Enhance your ability to age well with a supportive circle of care. Think of this as the team that keeps you thriving, not just surviving.

What does that look like for you?

Your healthcare providers are part of your circle of care. You may have a massage therapist, acupuncturist, and personal trainer in your circle. Your mental health practitioners belong here. A trusted guide for your spiritual side can be part of your circle of care. It’s up to you!

When you have the right support in place - physically, emotionally, and spiritually - you’re well-equipped to age well.

4. Stay connected to others

You’re not made to move through midlife and beyond without a social web. Connection with other people matters more than ever as you age.

Now is the time to spark new friendships, nurture relationships, and seek connection with positive, kind people who contribute to your emotional well-being and overall life satisfaction as you contribute to theirs.

Be open to new experiences and new acquaintances. Prioritize time to nurture new friendships and deepen existing ones. Community is a powerful part of aging well.

5. Shift your mindset

Your mindset shapes how you experience aging. If practices like gratitude, savoring joy, and celebrating little moments aren’t part of your life now, this is an ideal time to start!

Practices like these help you feel more fulfilled. They change the lens through which you view life.

Your aging well lifestyle is layered, and your mindset is at its core. Focus on what’s good. It’s a habit that changes everything.
