Summer Hydration and Nutrition: Feel Better with These Warm-Weather Tips
Summer brings longer days, easy-going vibes, vacations, and opportunities to enjoy the season. It also brings higher temperatures and increased demands on the body. Whether you're spending time by the pool, traveling, gardening, exercising, or simply running errands in the heat, hydration and nutrition play an important role in how you feel each day.
Summer Feels Different in Midlife and Beyond
You may notice that your body responds differently to heat than it once did when you enter midlife. Energy levels may dip more quickly, and it may take longer to recover from being out in the summer heat. The good news? Small shifts, consistently implemented, can make a difference.
Hydration: More Important Than You May Realize
Water supports nearly every system in your body. It helps regulate temperature, transport nutrients, lubricate joints, support digestion, and maintain energy levels. Your cardiovascular system relies on proper hydration to maintain healthy blood volume and reduce the workload on your heart.
Awareness of hydration becomes even more important as you age. Did you know your sense of thirst lessens as you get older? Add that to hormonal changes and reduced efficiency of aging organs, and it’s not difficult to understand why dehydration is a real concern for us in midlife and beyond.
Unfortunately, dehydration often begins before you realize it. Early signs can include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, dark-colored urine, muscle cramps, and brain fog. Some women also notice increased irritability or a general feeling of being "off" (anyone else thinking this sounds like everyday in peri/menopause?!).
Know the warning signs so you can increase your fluid intake before your energy, mood, physical performance, and overall well-being are affected.
During the summer months, it's important to be proactive rather than reactive. Instead of waiting until you're thirsty, make hydration part of your day. Start your day with a glass of water, keep a filled water bottle nearby, and increase your intake when exercising or spending time outdoors. You can also boost your hydration by eating water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber, berries, tomatoes, and leafy greens.
Nourishing Your Body Through the Summer Months
Nutrition is equally important. Summer often brings changes in routine, increased travel, social gatherings, and outdoor events. These can make it challenging to stay consistent with healthy nutritional choices and eating schedules.
By all means, enjoy summer’s seasonal treats! Think of harmonious ways to choose what your body needs to function and feel its best while allowing yourself tastes of summers past. Focus on eating seasonal fruits and vegetables, light, easy-to-digest meals, and minimally processed food. Enjoy the benefits of foods that leave you feeling energized, satisfied, and ready to make the most of all that summer has to offer.
Summer is also a good time to pay attention to added sugars and alcohol. While both can have a place in your summer plans, they may contribute to energy crashes, dehydration, inflammation, and disrupted sleep. Consider satisfying your sweet tooth with naturally sweet options like seasonal fruit, dates, or frozen grapes, and explore the growing variety of non-alcoholic beverages available today. Small swaps can help you feel better without feeling deprived.
Simple Reminders for a Feel-Good Summer
Summer wellness doesn't have to feel complicated. In fact, some of the most effective habits are also the simplest. Drink water consistently throughout the day, enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables, choose nourishing meals, and pay attention to how your body responds to different foods and beverages to have a meaningful impact on your energy, mood, and overall well-being.
The goal is awareness and consistency. Small choices made day after day often create greater results than dramatic changes that are difficult to maintain.
