Move More, Live Better: The Joy of Movement in Midlife and Beyond

Movement doesn't have to feel like a workout, chore, or something you have to do. It can be fun, even joyful.

If the word exercise makes you cringe, you're not alone! Finding the right kind of movement,  one that genuinely feels good to you, is the key to making it a lasting part of your life.

Movement isn't about pushing harder or doing more, my friend. It's about finding what lights you up and letting that be your guide.

Why Movement Is One of the Most Powerful Things You Can Do Right Now

In midlife and beyond, your body is changing (you don’t need me to tell you that!). Consistent movement is one of the most effective ways to support yourself through this roller coaster ride, and into the next chapter, too.

Regular physical activity helps preserve muscle mass, supports bone density, benefits your cardiovascular system, and keeps your joints mobile and strong. It lifts your mood, sharpens your thinking, and deepens your connection to your body.

Movement nourishes your spirit, too. It creates space to clear your head, reconnect with yourself, and feel alive in your body. The moments you’re moving can be a reprieve from the noise and bring you back to a quiet, centered place.

Find What Feels Good for You

This is where the joy comes in. Movement doesn't require a gym membership or a rigid workout schedule. If you find ways that you love to move your body, and then make space for them in your life, you’ll never ‘exercise’ again!

Love to dance? Put on a playlist and dance in your living room. Prefer a walk in the morning quiet? Wake up 15 minutes earlier, throw on your cool new kicks, and get outside. Enjoy gardening or a bike ride through your neighborhood? Get your hands dirty or let the wind catch your hair!

When movement feels like something you get to do rather than something you have to do, joy isn’t far behind!

Embrace Variety. Your Body Will Thank You.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is incorporate a mix of movement. Different forms support you in different ways, and variety keeps boredom from creeping in.

Weight-bearing movement boosts muscle strength and helps prevent bone loss. Movement that challenges your balance helps you prevent falls. Movement that keeps you flexible enhances your range of mobility. Aerobic movement that raises your heart rate supports your cardiovascular system and brain.

Think about the forms of movement that make you feel good. How are they supportive of your health? What might you need to add to ensure a well-rounded mix of movement?

Try to do something every day. Variety in your movement protects your body from overuse and keeps the joy alive.

Where to start? Start Where You Are.

Where you are is the ideal starting point, my friend. Begin with what feels accessible and enjoyable, and let your movement practice grow from there.

Please keep in mind that it’s always smart to speak to your physician before starting a new movement habit. Not only does it ensure you’re safe, but it also gives you a good baseline when evaluating test results in the future.

When you lead with joy, movement becomes a gift you give yourself every day.  Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you!
